We spoke with our expert perfumers in France to uncover the *heart* of the fragrance layering “trend.” Read on to see the best scent layering tips and tricks, types of fragrance layering combinations, and how Dossier fits effortlessly into the mix. What Is Fragrance Layering?

Our nose in France explains: Fragrance layering is the practice of wearing two fragrances together for these intended purposes:

01

Enhance particular notes (in either or both fragrances) or

02

Create a new, personalized scent

Wondering how fragrance layering works? Let’s go back to the perfume basics for a minute: The structure of a scent––its top, heart, and base notes. Fragrance layering works (or doesn’t) because it provides you with the opportunity to amplify certain notes within the structure of the perfume.

How To Layer Fragrances.

When it comes to fragrance-combining chemistry, our nose urges us not to stress! Instead focus on selecting two premium-quality fragrances (like those from Dossier!) that you think will smell great, or even better when paired together. Just a spray of each scent should do the trick.

To take your scent layering game to the next level, follow these tips to help your fragrances last and smell great all day:

  1. Ensure you’re starting with fresh, hydrated skin
  2. Consider using a lotion or body mist with a complementary scent if desired
  3. Apply the strongest fragrance as the base layer
  4. Layer the lighter of the two scents on top

Alongside considering how to layer fragrances, it’s important to be mindful of how different notes interact when joining forces on the skin. While more can be more, fragrance layering combinations are not created equal. Our nose in France shares the three main types of fragrance layer combinations conceived in the Dossier Creative Lab.

Types of Fragrance Layering Combinations:

Complementary Combinations

When you layer two fragrances that have certain overlapping or complementary notes. So, they pair with each other very well and harmoniously create a unique third scent when layered together. Think of this combination as a 100/100 relationship––fragrance edition.

Noteworthy Pairing To Consider:

Noteworthy Pairing To Consider:

  • Floral Marshmallow (inspired by Kilian’s Love, Don’t Be Shy)
  • Aquatic Vanilla (inspired by Juliette Has A Gun’s Vanilla Vibes)

Why Our Nose Says It Works: A tribute to vanilla, this pairing harmoniously blends edible marshmallow notes with warm, sunny beach and sea scents.

Unlikely Pairings

Unlikely fragrance pairings can result in surprisingly wonderful layering combinations. They are daring, unexpected, and, objectively, don’t sound like the most logical pairings. Yet, together, these two fragrances create delightful chemistry. These pairings can juxtapose traditionally masculine and feminine fragrances or any layering combinations that smell amazing––serendipitously.

Noteworthy Pairing To Consider:

Noteworthy Pairing To Consider:

  • Ambery Saffron (inspired by MFK’s Baccarat Rouge 540)
  • Ambery Cherry (inspired by Tom Ford’s Lost Cherry)

Why Our Nose Says It Works: Both fragrances have patchouli and gourmand notes. When layered together, this mix crafts a tantalizing, woody, floral, gourmand script.

Mutually-Elevating Mixes

Two fragrances that intuitively go together are your traditional layering mix. They often have common, overlapping notes, so one fragrance enhances an already existing facet of the other or adds an additional dimension through the pairing without altering the first fragrance’s original personality.

Noteworthy Pairing To Consider:

  • Woody Sandalwood (inspired by Le Labo’s Santal 33)
  • Powdery Coconut (inspired by Tom Ford’s Soleil Blanc)

Why Our Nose Says It Works: Woody Sandalwood adds an extra creamy touch to Powdery Coconut, which maximizes its comforting feeling of a warm embrace.
