Learn the difference between these two and decide which one works best for you.
For those who thought perfume and body spray are the same, don’t worry, you are not alone. It’s true they both are a combination of essential oils mixed with water and alcohol, and they are both sprayed on your skin to make you smell amazing, right? Let’s just go over the facts that make them different so you don’t confuse them anymore.
It’s all about the concentration, baby
Body spray can also be called Eau Fraiche because of its lightness and, yes, because they usually smell very fresh thanks to ingredients like citrus fruits and aquatic notes. Although there are some, it’s not that common to find body sprays with heavy florals or very spicy, warm notes.
And this lightness and less intense smell come from the concentration. That is the ratio of perfume oils and alcohol to water, or, in a more casual language, the concentration is what determines how strong a scent smells or how long it lasts on the skin. Basically, how much fragrance is in the bottle.
The concentration is also the main difference between an Eau de Parfum, Eau de Toilette, and body spray. For example, an Eau de Parfum typically contains a 15-20% concentration and it lasts from 4 to 7 hours, while a body spray contains a 1-3% concentration of oils.
This means body sprays don’t last that long on the skin and that’s the main reason why people use it as an “on-the-go” quick solution to carry in your bag and spray it on a few times during the day when you’re at work or running around all day.
The price is another difference between Eau de Parfum and body spray, but it’s directly linked to the concentration. Essential oil is the most precious ingredient in any kind of fragrance, so it makes sense that the more essential oil there is in a formula the more expensive to make it will be. That is why a body spray will normally be cheaper than a perfume.
Because perfume is an absolute luxury for the senses, it’s tied to our sweeter memories, our idea of a night out, or our significant other. It makes sense that’s more expensive! As the luxury that it is, perfume is not always something you can take in your bag and run. Actually, because of its composition, it’s very important where you store it to make the most of its properties and make it last in its best shape longer.
So technically, it’s safe to say that perfume is a better product than body spray, or a finer product if we may say so. But, essentially it is a matter of taste. Many people love to bathe in the warmest richest perfumes and bask in its delicious smell all day, and they love to be recognized for their signature scent, while other people only go for lighter scents that make them feel clean and fresh like they just stepped out of the shower.
